What is a DPC and How Does it Work?

If your home has suffered from rising damp in the past, the chances are that you will have heard the term ‘Damp Proof Course’. Often shortened to ‘DPC’, this is the protective barrier installed in the wall that prevents moisture from rising through the structure of the building.

When it comes to safeguarding against rising damp, London-based Avant Garde Damp Solutions are specialists in the field. As part of assessing the damage to your home, we will inspect your property’s DPC and offer a quotation, along with a clear and concise explanation of the work that is required.

Why You Need a DPC

Without a DPC properly installed, the building’s walls become highly susceptible to rising damp problems. Moisture can travel upwards via capillary action, which is when liquid travels up narrow spaces against the force of gravity. This will result in damp walls, and could potentially cause detrimental problems to the building’s structure that could result in costly damages.

Old style DPC’s were made from slate, which is why in older buildings it is common to find a layer of slate towards the bottom of walls. In modern building techniques, a plastic membrane is more common as it is a cost-effective solution, as well as being easier to install. Plastic DPC’s can be injected into the wall, meaning that installation is not invasive at all.

How Long Does a DPC Last?

You can expect an injected DPC to last for 20 years before it will require repairs. If you suspect your home to be showing signs of rising damp in London, our team of experts are on hand to inspect your DPC and offer advice on the best course of action. Even if your property is a new build or the DPC has only been installed in the last few years, there is still the chance of rising damp if the course has not been properly installed.

For this reason, it is important that your DPC is installed by a team of experts that can guarantee its quality. At Avant Garde Damp Solutions, you can request a survey by filling out our short online questionnaire.
